I am excited to be participating in Skate for Hope AGAIN! The first time was such a wonderful experience getting to meet some of my favorite skaters, getting to skate on arena ice (its so big), honoring my mom for her journey with breast cancer, helping to raise money for a great cause that has touched so many people's lives, and doing it all while carrying my daughter. While it was fun, there is a bigger reason I choose to participate. I skate in hopes that answers can be found through the money we raise, so cancer becomes a thing of the past or at least loses its power to bring fear into people's lives.
I cannot remember a time the word cancer was not in my vocabulary. My (Great)Aunt Rose had it several times throughout my childhood but her house was always filled with love. I told my grandmother not to delay treatment for her cancer to attend my college graduation because I would have bigger life events later that I would need her there for. She came anyways because she makes the rules. And I will never forget the fear that I carried with me throughout my mom's cancer diagonis and treatment. She was always there with a smile and a laugh, telling me not to worry. These are the warriors in my life; these women are the ones that come to mind whenever I hear the word STRENGTH.
I have paid for my costume and registration. Your donations are not paying for me to skate or feel pretty, your donations are not paying for the pros that are giving their time for love of the sport and this great cause. Your donations are going supporting the efforts of:
- Stephanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research
- OSU James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute
